The château de Maulnes stands in a forest clearing in the Yonne, built on an unusual pentagonal plan for French Renaissance architecture. Constructed in a single campaign between 1566 and 1573 for Antoine de Crussol, Duke of Uzès, and his wife Louise de Clermont, it was barely inhabited and fell into neglect for centuries before restoration work began. Its architectural centerpiece, a staircase built around a well fed by three springs, is the main feature visitors come to see.
