The château de Martigné stands above the Vègre valley in the commune of Avessé, in the Sarthe department. Built from the 15th century onward, it retains a main residential block flanked by rectangular pavilions, and belonged for generations to the Bréhier family from Anjou. It later passed to Nicolas de Tronchay and then to Félix de Samson, who had a chapel built there in 1678, before being sold as national property during the Revolution and eventually acquired by the naturalist and Sarthe deputy Clément-Jacques Goupil.
