The fortress of Lombers, first recorded in 1032 and demolished on Richelieu's orders in 1633, survives today only as a monumental cross atop the hill overlooking the village. The site witnessed the Albigensian Crusade, hosted a significant Cathar council in 1165, and passed through the hands of powerful medieval families from the Adhémars to the Comminges. Visitors come less for standing walls than for this layered history and the view from the hilltop.
