To make a day of it

Château de Lillebonne stands in Lillebonne (Seine-Maritime), in the Normandie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages, limite 13th century 14th century, 14th century, 15th century). No visits are on record for this building.

In Lillebonne, on the site of the ancient Roman town of Juliobona, the ruins of a medieval fortress reflect nearly three centuries of successive building campaigns. William the Conqueror had the first stronghold built here, before Philip Augustus added a massive cylindrical keep with ribbed vaulting, still the most striking surviving structure. The octagonal tower, added later by the d'Harcourt family in the late 13th century, completes this partly listed medieval complex.

What to know

  • The site consists of ruins, including a keep, an octagonal tower and the so-called Chartrier tower, rather than a furnished château.
  • The visit takes place mostly outdoors, over ground that includes ditches and remains of walls, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • As no opening hours or admission fees have been confirmed, it is best to check before visiting.
  • The site is located close to the centre of Lillebonne, a short distance from the Notre-Dame church.
