What the French Ministry of Culture records

Château cité dès le 12e siècle, se composant à l'origine de quatre tours du 15e siècle dont deux existent encore en partie. Il était entouré d'un mur d'enceinte surmonté d'un promenoir et de claires-voies en pierres de taille découpées, et précédé d'un étang et de douves. Ce mur était percé d'une porte à pont-levis, et flanqué de cinq autres tours dont trois subsistent partiellement. La chapelle, du 16e ou 17e siècle, construite hors de l'enceinte, conserve quelques pierres tombales. En 1758, le château est incendié par les Anglais, à cause de sa résistance lors de leur débarquement à Cancale, Olivier-Joseph de France, son propriétaire et capitaine général des gardes côtes de Dol, commandait deux batteries basses qui tirèrent sur leurs navires.
