To make a day of it
Château de Laloubère stands in Laloubère (Hautes-Pyrénées), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first half of the 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
Laloubère castle, remodelled in the early nineteenth century in the Empire style, stands on a site occupied since the Middle Ages: a feudal mound with its ditches still remains nearby, evidence of a shift to the present location around the year one thousand. The current building, massive and regular, houses a monumental staircase whose walls are decorated with Pompeian motifs, and reception rooms whose ceilings and wood panelling bear the mark of the 1820s. The visit provides access to the three ground-floor reception rooms and the main staircase.
What to know
- The main staircase, a major feature of the visit, displays painted decoration with Roman figures and putti on a red background.
- The three ground-floor reception rooms (salon, dining room, vestibule) have unified decorative treatment with painted ceilings and wood panelling.
- The adjacent feudal mound, while not part of the interior tour, remains visible on the grounds and illustrates the site's medieval origins.
- A chapel, formerly the parish church, is part of the protected ensemble.
- A commemorative column in the park recalls the visit of the Duchess of Angoulême in 1823.
