To make a day of it

Château de la Rivière stands in Saint-Fromond (Manche), in the Normandie region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The ruins of the Château de la Rivière stand on a low rise amid the former marshes of the Vire river, in Saint-Fromond. Built in the 13th century and entirely rebuilt in the late 15th, this former stronghold still shows its broad polygonal moated enclosure flanked by round towers, including a keep. The 1944 fighting badly damaged the building, which had been used as a powder store and was blown up by German forces before their withdrawal. The site now shelters a colony of storks.

What to know

  • The interior of the ruins is closed to visitors in order to protect the storks nesting on site.
  • The château can therefore only be viewed from the outside, around the former marshland.
  • No opening hours or admission fees apply, since there is no organised visit of the interior.
  • The ground is flat but damp, being former marshland, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • No information is available regarding accessibility for people with reduced mobility or for dogs.
