In Avrillé, near Angers, the château de la Perrière spreads its three U-shaped ranges of buildings around an entrance courtyard, in a 17th-century design raised by the Goddes de Varennes family over the remains of a medieval manor. Inside, the great salon keeps its Louis XVI wood panelling, alongside a staircase with wrought-iron railing and a vaulted, timber-lined chapel standing apart, facing the orangery. The estate, long held by private owners, has belonged to the town of Avrillé since 1982 following decades of restoration work.
