What the French Ministry of Culture records
La tour rectangulaire est tout ce qui reste du château seigneurial de la puissante baronnie de la Châtre. Au 18e siècle, le donjon est transformé en prison. La tour fut sans doute réédifiée en même temps que les derniers remparts de la ville, entre 1417 et 1440. L'intérieur des quatre étages est desservi par un escalier de pierre à vis en tourelle et composé, à chaque palier, d'une vaste pièce avec cheminée, d'une autre plus petite, et d'un cabinet noir.
