In Tence, in the Haute-Loire department, the château de la Brosse stands in the hamlet bearing its name, north of the town. Originally a medieval fortified house built for watch duty rather than defence, it passed through several noble families before being reshaped in 1778 into a country residence. That later building gave it a two-storey, five-bay façade, while a round tower with a conical roof and traces of machicolations still recall its earlier fortified character.
