To make a day of it

Château de la Ballue stands in Bazouges-la-Pérouse (Ille-et-Vilaine), in the Bretagne region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first quarter of the 17th century, 18th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

At Bazouges-la-Pérouse, the château de la Ballue owes its reputation less to its Louis XIII main building than to its terraced gardens, recreated in the 1970s following a layout dating back to the 18th century. Visitors follow a route through clipped groves, green rooms and a yew-hedge maze that plays with views over the surrounding Breton countryside. The building itself, rebuilt in the early 18th century after an initial construction phase in 1620, retains period woodwork in several rooms. The gardens were awarded the Jardin remarquable label in 2005.
