In Grand-Fougeray, in Ille-et-Vilaine, stands the 13th century keep, the sole remnant of a fortress that once had nine towers. Rising 34 metres with a diameter of 13 metres, it retains much of its original defensive layout. Tradition holds that Bertrand Du Guesclin seized the stronghold here in 1354 through a famous ruse, his men having entered disguised as woodcutters.
