To make a day of it

Château de Denainvilliers stands in Dadonville (Loiret), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 17th century, 18th century, first quarter of the 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Built in the early 17th century by Claude Duhamel, introducer of Ambassadors to Louis XIII, this Loiret château bears the marks of a singular architectural history. The central building dates from 1625, complemented between 1632 and 1638 by two lateral pavilions linked by wings. The chapel, consecrated in 1647, is part of this ensemble with classical facades. The château's roots run deeper still: a 14th-century round tower and a 17th-century square tower remain within its grounds.

What to know

  • An oval room with decor on the first floor and a staircase cage featuring a sundial are among the individually protected elements.
  • The estate includes outbuildings and a former Polish mill erected in 1750 by Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau, a scholar who continued his scientific work there.
  • The château underwent major restoration in 1956 after a long period of deterioration.
  • Medieval towers and the entrance walls complete its classification as a historic monument.
