To make a day of it

Château de Crèvecœur-en-Auge stands in Mézidon Vallée d'Auge (Calvados), in the Normandie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Set on a moated mound, the remains of this Norman stronghold span nine centuries of turbulent history, from the Hundred Years' War to the Wars of Religion. The site combines a square keep, a timber framed dwelling, a medieval chapel and a dovecote within the outer court, all restored after a long period of neglect. Since the 1970s it has also housed a museum devoted to oil exploration, linked to the Schlumberger family who own the estate.

What to know

  • The facades, roofs and chapel are protected as historic monuments.
  • The entrance gate seen today was moved here from another site, the Beuvillers manor house.
  • The medieval layout means part of the route crosses the mound and uneven ground.
