To make a day of it

Château de Courcelles-lès-Gisors stands in Courcelles-lès-Gisors (Oise), in the Hauts-de-France region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 11th century, 12th century, 13th century). No visits are on record for this building.

Perched on a natural escarpment overlooking the Epte valley, near the church of Courcelles-lès-Gisors, stand the remains of a stronghold built around 1098. Of the square keep only one wall survives, rising over three levels, surrounded by the traces of a square enclosure and its ditch. The site owes its fame to the 1198 battle, when Richard the Lionheart seized it in an attempt to retake Gisors from Philip Augustus. Visitors come here for the atmosphere of a medieval ruin set on its hilltop, rather than for a restored monument.
