Le château jouxte l'église paroissiale, à l'origine chapelle castrale. Tous deux occupaient une vaste plate-forme délimitée par un large fossé. La seigneurie de Cognac est mentionnée dès le 13e siècle. Le château est un édifice composite constitué de plusieurs corps de bâtiments construits ou modifiés à différentes époques. La partie la plus ancienne est la tour carrée dont la maçonnerie en bel appareil de granit est en grande partie conservée côté ouest.
