La seigneurie de Cognac est mentionnée dès le 13e siècle. Le château est un édifice composite constitué de plusieurs corps de bâtiments construits ou modifiés à différentes époques. La partie la plus ancienne est la tour carrée dont la maçonnerie en bel appareil de granit est en grande partie conservée côté ouest.
