To make a day of it

Château de Clayrac stands in Amarens (Tarn), in the Occitanie region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château de Clayrac stands at Amarens, in the Tarn department, on the foundations of a fortified building dating from the 14th century that was extensively altered over time. Its most striking feature is a large round tower housing a spiral staircase, whose top, torn down during the Revolution, was later rebuilt in a reddish stone that contrasts with the pale masonry elsewhere on the façade. A second round tower at the rear suffered the same fate but was never restored. Nearby, a former underground millstone quarry, worked for six centuries, can be entered freely.

What to know

  • The château has a U shaped plan with a central residential block flanked by two wings, one of which still shows a row of arcades leading to the former stables.
  • The nearby underground quarry, known as the meulière de Clayrac, contains around ten carved chambers arranged around a central pillar and can be visited freely.
  • No verified information on opening hours, admission fees or access conditions for the château itself is available.
  • As the upper parts of the building are partly ruined, visitors should expect the visit to be mainly from the outside.
