In Charolles, the medieval fortress that gave the town its name survives today mainly as two towers, folded into the urban fabric and extended by an 18th-century wing now used as the town hall. The tower known as the Téméraire tower, built between 1471 and 1474, and the Tour des Diamants, named for its diamond-cut stone facing, recall a stronghold that once guarded the crossing of the Arconce and Semence rivers. The inner courtyard, once home to a chapel, is now an open public garden.
