What the French Ministry of Culture records

Entre le 12e et le 13e siècle, les rois d'Aragon qui possédaient une grande partie des fortifications de la vallée, en furent peu à peu dépossédés par les évêques de Mende. Chanac, de par sa position centrale dans la vallée, représente un maillon important dans cette lutte et tombe dans les mains de l'évêque au début du 13e siècle. La construction du donjon se situe entre la fin du 12e et le début du 13e siècle. Il s'agit du donjon du castrum de Chanac. Le bâtiment, construit en moellons équarris de calcaire, présente des assises relativement régulières, et s'élève sur quatre niveaux : un rez-de-chaussée voûté en berceau, un premier étage autrefois voûté, un second étage aujourd'hui planchéié et un dernier étage en berceau. Chaque niveau est desservi par un escalier ménagé dans la maçonnerie. Ce donjon est le seul vestige d'un ensemble plus vaste, le site ayant servi de résidence d'été aux évêques de Mende à la fin du 16e siècle. Les agrandissements importants réalisés à la fin du 17e ou au début du 18e siècle ne sont connus que par les documents d'archives, le château ayant été pillé puis brûlé en 1793.
