To make a day of it

Château de Bretteville stands in Bretteville-Saint-Laurent (Seine-Maritime), in the Normandie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 18th century). Adult admission costs 10 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Built around 1730 in the Caux region, this château of pink brick and blue grey sandstone reflects the newly acquired nobility of Albert-Louis Asselin, a counsellor to Louis XV. The estate later passed to the Miromesnil family, whose marquis served as Keeper of the Seals under Louis XVI, before descending to the Courtivron and then the Chavagnac families. A guided tour leads from the courtyard of honour through panelled reception rooms, then out into gardens laid out in an eighteenth century spirit, with lawns, a grove and a sunken ha-ha opening onto the horizon.
