A kilometre south of Blanquefort, in the Gironde, the ruins of this medieval stronghold stand on a rocky outcrop once surrounded by marshland. Occupied since the Bronze Age, the site bears traces of eight centuries of successive building campaigns: an 11th century keep, enlarged by the English kings at the end of the 13th century, then altered until the 16th to withstand artillery. Dismantled under Mazarin after the Fronde, it now shows the bare but still readable layout of a medieval fortress.
