What the French Ministry of Culture records

Au 11e siècle, un premier donjon rectangulaire est bâti à l'emplacement d'une ancienne tour en bois, le site étant lui-même occupé depuis la protohistoire. A la fin du 13e siècle, Edouard Ier, duc de Guyenne, futur roi d'Angleterre, améliore la construction pour en faire une forteresse. Le premier donjon est alors flanqué de six tours et protégé par une enceinte en pierres. De 1453 à 1465, l'ensemble de l'enceinte est remanié pour répondre aux exigences de l'artillerie. En 1541, nouvelle réfection de l'enceinte. A la fin du 17e siècle, la forteresse est démantelée, sans doute par ordre de Mazarin.
