The Château de Berneray stands two kilometres from Saint-Savinien, in the Charente-Maritime region, on the remains of a 15th-century stronghold, traces of whose moats can still be seen along the enclosing walls. The present house, built in the 17th century by Jean de Saulières, lord of Lescure and Berneray, retains its Louis XIII doorway, decorated with fluted pilasters, carved foliage and a broken pediment bearing a coat of arms. The buildings form a square around a courtyard, with the residence to the south, outbuildings to the north, and a dovecote set apart.
