Perched on a rocky spur above the Loire valley at Goudet, the ruins of Beaufort castle date back to the 13th century. Built to watch over four converging valleys, the fortress was reinforced in the 16th century by Antoine de la Tour, who added towers designed to withstand early artillery. Left to decay after the Revolution, it still shows an enclosing wall, a vaulted room and a fireplace that hint at its former layout.
