# Château de Beaufort

Goudet, Haute-Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Château de Beaufort stands in Goudet (Haute-Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 15th century, 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Perched on a rocky spur above the Loire valley at Goudet, the ruins of Beaufort castle date back to the 13th century. Built to watch over four converging valleys, the fortress was reinforced in the 16th century by Antoine de la Tour, who added towers designed to withstand early artillery. Left to decay after the Revolution, it still shows an enclosing wall, a vaulted room and a fireplace that hint at its former layout.
