Château d'Hauterive stands in Castres (Tarn), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
On the outskirts of Castres, along the Thoré river, the château d'Hauterive still shows in its square plan and water-filled moat the imprint of a stronghold dating back to the 13th century. The 14th century gatehouse, with its slit arrow loops, recalls the defensive purpose of the building before later centuries added mullioned windows and a thorough 17th century reworking. Held in turn by the Montfort and Hautpoul families before passing to the Villeneuve family at the end of the 18th century, the estate combines architecture from several periods with a park that replaced the demolished south wing in the 19th century.
