Situation exceptionnelle dans le site de la vallée du Layon. L'élément majeur du château est le donjon quadrangulaire sans doute édifié à la fin du 11e siècle, largement reconstruit au 15e siècle. Le château est constitué d'une double enceinte, avec tours flanquantes plus ou moins conservées, une enceinte intérieure avec deux fortes tours carrées conservant de nombreuses dispositions architecturales intéressantes, ainsi que des portes et serrureries originelles..
