What the French Ministry of Culture records

Au 13e siècle, les hauteurs du village étaient occupées par un château occupant les positions défensives déjà utilisées par les Romains. Délaissé au 16e siècle, le château tomba en ruine. Succédant à ce château, le "château bas" fut construit en 1492 par Raymond de Prévinquières. En 1578, pendant les guerres de Religion, une compagnie y fut cantonnée. En 1625, les tours et le donjon furent rabaissés. A la même époque sont engagés des travaux d'aménagement intérieur qui se poursuivent aux 19e et 20e siècles. A la Révolution, le château est vendu comme bien national. Racheté par les habitants, il est restitué au chevalier Philippe Antoine de Raymond à son retour d'émigration. L'édifice présente un quadrilatère flanqué de quatre tours rondes, dominé autrefois par un donjon carré. L'accès se fait à la base du donjon par une porte à bossages. Les fenêtres ont été repercées au 18e siècle. A l'intérieur, les cheminées monumentales ont été retouchées au 19e siècle, et décorées de peinture au 20e.
