To make a day of it

Castellas de Montpeyroux stands in Montpeyroux (Hérault), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The castellas of Montpeyroux stands on a height overlooking the old droving route between the small and great Causses, in the Hérault department. The fortified site, likely dating back to Carolingian times, still has a crenellated wall with three gateways, two of which are now blocked. The keep, the lord's residence and the castle chapel of Saint-Pierre that once stood at its centre vanished when a religious establishment was built there in 1864, of which ruins remain. Visitors come mainly for the medieval enclosure and the view over the village and plain, rather than for intact buildings.

What to know

  • The site sits on a height above the village, so reaching it means walking uphill.
  • None of the original interior buildings survive; only the enclosure wall and the ruins of the 19th century religious establishment can be seen.
  • The castellas has been listed as a historic monument since a February 2025 order protecting all structures, ground and subsoil within the enclosure.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility arrangements are documented for this site.
