The Abbaye de Lanvaux estate, in Brandivy in the Morbihan, stands on the site of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1138 by the Blessed Abbot Ruaud at the request of Baron Alain I of Lanvaux. Visitors find an abbot's house from the early eighteenth century set within a park of nearly seven hectares, the remains of the former monastery, a fountain thought to date from the fifteenth century, the base of a chapel wall and a retting pit used until the early twentieth century. Bordered by the Loc'h river and backed by the Lanvaux and Floranges state forests, the site combines woodland walks with the traces of a turbulent history, religious first and then industrial.
