A few kilometres from Carcassonne, the château de Pennautier displays its 17th-century façades in the middle of a working vineyard estate. Built from 1620 for the Reich de Pennautier family, it still holds the memory of a stay by Louis XIII, whose travelling furniture is kept in the so-called King's Room.

Set on a low rise in the Lauragais region, the Château de La Pomarède combines an 11th-12th century keep with a broader fortified complex built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Its trapezoidal enclosure, once surrounded by a circular moat, is now crossed via a three-arch bridge dating from the 17th century.
