In Montfort-sur-Meu, the Papegaut tower is the last remaining trace of a fortified castle built in the 11th century and rebuilt at the end of the 14th century, after it was retaken from the English by Raoul VIII of Brittany. Its massive form, with round chambers at the base and octagonal ones higher up, stands near the church, topped by a row of machicolations that once carried a wall walk. Its name comes from an old marksmanship game reserved for the town militia, which involved shooting at a wooden bird mounted atop the tower. Used as a prison in the 19th century and later as a local history museum, it is currently undergoing restoration.
