To make a day of it

Site archéologique d'Orville stands in Louvres (Val-d'Oise), in the Île-de-France region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Orville site, in Louvres, is an archaeological excavation ground where the remains of a medieval fortified castle lie alongside those of a much older Carolingian village. Visitors can see traces of a stronghold besieged and destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, along with full-scale reconstructions of early medieval wood and wattle-and-daub buildings. The site remains primarily a working research dig, where archaeologists and volunteers continue each summer to uncover and preserve the structures.

What to know

  • The site is mainly visited in groups, by appointment, during the warmer months.
  • Individual visitors can access it during national events such as archaeology days or heritage days.
  • Part of the site, the former limestone quarry in the northeast, is closed to the public.
  • The excavations themselves take place every summer, which makes certain periods particularly lively.
  • The site is located about 900 metres from the Archéa museum, to which it belongs.
