To make a day of it

Palais de Charlemagne ou Dome stands in Attigny (Ardennes), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 18th century). The building is not open to visitors.

In Attigny, on the square that bears his name, a vaulted 16th-century passage recalls a Carolingian palace that no longer exists. The building seen today, topped by an upper floor and attic, was erected during the Renaissance over the remains of a royal residence once used by Pepin the Short and later by Charlemagne. Two plaques on either side of the passage list the assemblies, councils and royal meetings held there between the 8th and 10th centuries. What remains is limited to this carved passage with its small columns, listed as a historic monument.
