What the French Ministry of Culture records

La seigneurie de Wierre-au-Bois, mentionnée dès 1113, a appartenu successivement à plusieurs familles : au 15e siècle, elle était la propriété de la famille de la Bouverie, et c'est sans doute à Jean de la Bouverie, sénéchal du Boulonnais, que l'on doit les parties les plus anciennes du château. Au 16e siècle, le château est devenu un lieu de prêche du protestantisme. Des remaniements ont eu lieu aux 17e et 18e siècles (corps d'entrée et corps de logis). Acquis par la famille De Bonnières au 18e siècle, le domaine de Wierre-au-Bois est devenu la résidence d'été du célèbre critique littéraire Sainte-Beuve, cousin de la famille, jusqu'en 1823. Il a laissé de ses vacances de jeunesse des écrits et riches descriptions du château, notamment dans son roman Volupté. Des dépendances ont été ajoutées au 19e siècle.
