Haras national stands in Gelos (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 18th century, 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
What the French Ministry of Culture records
L'emplacement aurait appartenu, depuis 1630, à monsieur de Portau, abbé laïque de Gelos. La propriété fut revendue au baron de Duplaa qui fit construire en 1784 le château actuel où se retrouvait toute l'aristocratie locale à l'occasion de fêtes dont l'éclat fit surnommer Gelos le "Versailles béarnais". En 1808, Napoléon y séjourna et décida d'y faire transporter le haras alors installé à Astous. L'édifice actuel comporte, à l'est et à l'ouest, deux pavillons construits au 19e siècle. Le château d'origine comprend un grand corps de logis central sensiblement en retrait par rapport aux deux pavillons est et ouest. Ce corps de logis est agrémenté d'un avant-corps central légèrement en saillie, coiffé d'un fronton triangulaire. Le hall d'entrée conserve un escalier avec sa grille en fer forgé provenant de l'hôtel Duplaa d'Escout à Pau, aujourd'hui détruit, installé en 1959.
