To make a day of it
Stadtburg Plettenberg stands in Plettenberg (Märkischer Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Stadtburg Plettenberg was a moated castle built around 1100 by the von Plettenberg family, in the settlement then known as Heslipho, which later took the family's name. The Romanesque structure, with thick walls and round-arched openings, covered nearly 4500 square metres between two watercourses, enclosed by moats and high defensive walls fitted with arrow slits. It was torn down in 1958 despite objections, and nothing of it remains visible on site today: a bank branch now stands on the former grounds. A few rescued elements, finely carved oak doors and a staircase, are kept at the Burgmuseum in Altena.
