To make a day of it

Schloss Stockau stands in Dieburg (Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Stockau stood at Dieburg in Hesse from 1699 until 1857, when its last owner had it completely torn down after selling off the building materials. No trace of the castle itself survives: what can be visited today is the surrounding park, laid out in the 18th century with French, Dutch and English sections, parts of which have been restored according to the original plans. Goethe spent New Year's Eve 1779 there with Duke Charles Augustus of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and Karl Theodor von Dalberg, and is said to have influenced the garden's design through his advice. The town museum of Dieburg, housed in the Fechenbacher Schloss, keeps the historic garden plans.

What to know

  • The castle itself has been gone since 1857: only the surrounding park, the Schlossgarten, can be visited today.
  • The surviving building on the grounds is not the castle but the former mill turned factory, now a private residence.
  • Plans of the historic garden are displayed at the town museum of Dieburg, in the Fechenbacher Schloss.
  • The park has hosted the annual Schlossgartenfest since 1961.
