To make a day of it

Schloss Schmiedelfeld stands in Sulzbach-Laufen (Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schmiedelfeld Castle overlooks the Kocher valley above Sulzbach, standing on a rocky spur that already carried a medieval stronghold in the 12th century. Of the baroque palace built in 1739 on the site of the earlier Renaissance residence of the Schenken von Limpurg, only the horseshoe-shaped building remains, now used as a private home, along with a stretch of medieval wall. The most notable surviving feature is the former castle church, a restored Renaissance building that now serves as a cultural venue, set slightly apart on the south side of the complex.

What to know

  • The main castle building is today a private residence and cannot be visited.
  • Only the restored former castle church is accessible, used as a cultural venue.
  • The site sits on a hilltop spur above the confluence of the Eisbach and the Kocher, reached by a climbing road from Sulzbach.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are available, as the former chapel is used for occasional events.
