To make a day of it

Schloss Plauen stands in Plauen (Vogtlandkreis), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Schloss Plauen stands on a rocky spur above the Weiße Elster river, in the Schlossberg district of Plauen. Founded around 1250 by the Vögte of Plauen, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, served as a prison from 1852, and was heavily damaged by air raids in April 1945. The remaining prison wings were only demolished in 2013, which allowed archaeological excavations to uncover the triangular layout of the original stronghold. Today the site is essentially visited as a ruin and excavation area, including the fourteen-sided red tower that still stands.
