Schloss Plaue stands in Brandenburg an der Havel, on the western bank of the Havel where the river leaves the Plauer See. The present baroque building dates from the 18th century and was raised on the remains of an earlier stronghold that once guarded the border between the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. A landscape park stretches south of the castle along the lakeshore as far as the Wendsee. Traces of an earlier Slavic settlement have been found on the site, predating the castle itself.
