To make a day of it

Schloss Philippsfreude stands in Wittlich (Landkreis Bernkastel-Wittlich), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Wittlich once hosted a rococo palace named Schloss Philippsfreude, raised between 1762 and 1763 on behalf of the prince-electors of Trier upon the grounds of Burg Ottenstein, a medieval stronghold dating to 1402. Architect Jean Antoine gave it its French style, and elector Johann Philipp von Walderdorff used it both for hunting excursions and as a summer retreat. French revolutionary forces razed the palace in 1794, after which its stones were gradually sold off. Today only the Schlossplatz, a town square bearing its name, recalls the building's existence.
