Schloss Melsungen stands in northern Hesse on the site of a medieval stronghold that once guarded a crossing over the Fulda river. Built between 1550 and 1557 for Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous by his son William IV, it belongs to the late Weser Renaissance style and today comprises the main hall, the former residence of the burgraves and an adjoining former stable block. The rubble-stone buildings with quoined corners now house administrative offices, which limits public access.
