Schloss Hausen stands in Oberaula, in the Schwalm-Eder district, on the site of a moated stronghold that belonged to Fulda Abbey from at least the thirteenth century. Ravaged by Bavarian troops during the Thirty Years' War, the building was rebuilt in Renaissance style, with work completed in 1687 under Johann Kaspar von Dörnberg. The von Dörnberg family, owners since the mid-fifteenth century, still occupy the estate today. It is also known as the birthplace, in 1768, of Wilhelm von Dörnberg.
What to know

- The site is protected as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
- The outer walls, up to three metres thick at their base, still show visible scars from the destruction suffered during the Thirty Years' War.
