The Schloss Gräfenhausen, in Weiterstadt, stands on the site of a former moated castle founded shortly after 1211 by the von Hagen family, later held for more than four centuries by the lords of Heusenstamm. The present building dates from 1555 and was reworked into a Renaissance residence in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, when Hans Heinrich von Heussenstamm added a forecourt, barns and defensive bastions. Bought by the city of Darmstadt in 1887, it has housed a social institution, the Ohlystift, since 1888, serving over the years as a children's home and now as a care home for the elderly. Little remains of the original moat and courtyard after renovation works carried out between 1988 and 1990.
