Schloss Elsterwerda stands on the banks of the Schwarze Elster on the site of an earlier Burg first recorded in 1288, itself replaced in the early 17th century by a multi-wing residence. The building seen today largely dates from the reconstruction begun in 1727 for Augustus the Strong, designed by his court architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and carried out under Johann Christoph Knöffel: a three-wing structure open to the east, in the Dresden Baroque style. It later served as a hunting and pleasure residence, then as a summer seat for a Duke of Courland until 1796.
