To make a day of it

Schloss Würdenhain stands in Röderland (Landkreis Elbe-Elster), in Brandenburg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Würdenhain no longer stands: this former stronghold, raised around 1200 at the confluence of the Große Röder and the Schwarze Elster, was torn down in 1442 on the order of the Saxon elector Frederick II, who formally forbade its rebuilding. Dendrochronological analysis carried out in 2021, after oak foundation piles were accidentally unearthed during pipeline works, confirmed that construction was already underway in 1209. Today only a memorial stone, erected in 1998, marks the presumed site, as the moats and earthworks were gradually filled in and levelled over the centuries.
