To make a day of it

Schloss Biendorf stands in Bernburg (Salzlandkreis), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Biendorf stands at Bernburg, in the Salzlandkreis, Saxony-Anhalt. Built around 1720 as a small country manor, it was enlarged between 1759 and 1784 under Prince Carl Georg Leberecht of Anhalt-Köthen into a late Baroque summer residence, complete with tower, orangery and chapel. A fire in 1919 destroyed much of the complex, and what stands today is largely a 1927 rebuild. The house now contains a private collector's museum run by its Dutch owners.

What to know

  • The palace stands in the village of Biendorf, part of the town of Bernburg.
  • A landscaped park surrounds the building, begun in 1813 and extended in the 20th century.
  • Of the former Baroque garden, only the wall and sandstone portal on the north side survive and are protected as heritage elements.
  • The private museum inside the palace displays, among other things, a collection of around 75,000 thimbles.
  • The building also functions today as guest accommodation, so the visitable part is limited to the museum and its grounds.
