The Ruine Rabenstein consists of the remains of a hilltop Burg on a basalt outcrop in the Hohe Rhön, standing at 835 metres near the Rabenstein summit. Only fragments of wall survive, together with two passages cut into the rock, one fitted with steps, the other shorter, neither connected to the other. Nothing is recorded about its early history, but its location on the old border between the territories of Fulda and Würzburg suggests it served to guard that frontier. The ruin now lies within the Wildflecken military training area, which governs whether and how it can be approached at all.
