The Burgruine Botenlauben rises above the Reiterswiesen district of Bad Kissingen, on a hill some 340 metres high. Built around 1180, it owes its fame to the minnesinger Otto von Botenlauben, who lived there with his wife Beatrix de Courtenay from 1220 to 1242. The castle later passed to the Bishopric of Würzburg and was destroyed in the 16th century during the Margrave War, after which its stones were used as a quarry by local residents. What remains today are ruined towers and walls that recall this turbulent past.
